In Murshidabad district of West Bengal, authorities discovered the body of a 52-year-old man hanging from a tree near his home on Thursday. According to police reports, the deceased was under significant mental stress due to fears of being removed from the voter list during a special intensive revision (SIR) process.
Identification and Background
The individual has been identified as Tarak Saha, a resident of Gandhi Colony in the Uttarpara area under the Berhampore municipality. A senior police official stated that Saha's family expressed concerns about his mental state, particularly after he learned that his name was absent from the 2002 voter list.
Circumstances Surrounding the Death
According to family members, Saha became increasingly anxious upon realizing that he lacked any documentation to prove his status as a legitimate voter. The state of West Bengal is currently undergoing a special intensive revision of voter lists for the first time in 23 years, with the last revision occurring in 2002.
Authorities have registered a case of unnatural death, and an investigation is underway.
Wider Implications
Police noted that since the announcement of the SIR, there have been reports of several individuals allegedly taking their own lives due to fears of being removed from the voter list during this revision process.
